EN 9 is a medium carbon steel with a general composition of 0.50–0.60% Carbon, 0.50–0.80% Manganese, and slight impurities such as Silicon, Sulfur, and Phosphorus. It has high tensile strength and satisfactory wear resistance. Its mechanical properties are a tensile strength of 600–800 MPa, hardness of 190–220 HB (annealed), and good machinability. When heat-treated, the EN 9 is capable of attaining increased strength and hardness, thus being used for parts subjected to wear and stress, such as shafts, gears, and axles.
