The typical composition of EN8, a medium-carbon steel alloy, is 0.36–0.44% carbon, 0.60–1.00% manganese, and trace amounts of silicon, sulphur, and phosphorus. EN8’s balanced strength and toughness are a result of this composition. Depending on the heat treatment, it has a tensile strength of 550–700 MPa and a yield strength of 280–450 MPa. Particularly when normalised or annealed, EN8 shows good machinability and moderate weldability. Although the steel is frequently supplied untreated, it can be flame or induction hardened to increase surface hardness, which makes it appropriate for parts that are subjected to wear and stress.
