Carbon-manganese steels with low carbon (≤0.18%) and carefully regulated phosphorus, sulphur, and inclusions to stop crack initiation are commonly used for NACE HIC boiler plates. The steel undergoes HIC resistance testing after being normalised or thermally treated for improved microstructure. Mechanical characteristics include a tensile strength of 440–610 MPa and a yield strength of 260–355 MPa. The range of elongation is 20–25%. The plates are thoroughly tested for resistance to laminar tearing, SSC, and hydrogen blistering in wet H₂S environments and satisfy NACE MR0103 and MR0175 standards.

Tempering : Notch toughness can be improved by quenched cooling from hot rolling or normalizing by the supplier. If such a faster cooling rate is agreed upon between purchaser and supplier then the steel is also to be tempered at 1200 F.
Applications : Used for weld fabrication of pressure vessels that require improved notch toughness for lower than ambient temperature service.
