With additions of manganese and niobium, stainless steel 17-4 PH is an iron-based alloy that contains approximately 15–17.5% chromium, 3–5% nickel, and 3–5% copper. Heat treatment (precipitation hardening) gives it high strength and hardness. Depending on heat treatment, its mechanical characteristics include a tensile strength of up to 1170 MPa, a yield strength of approximately 1000 MPa, and good elongation of 10–20%. The alloy retains its strength up to 600°F (316°C) and provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. In both industrial and aerospace settings, it combines excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical performance.
