The austenitic chromium-nickel alloy known as stainless steel 304L has a low carbon content (≤0.03%) and contains roughly 18–20% chromium and 8–12% nickel. It has a 40% elongation, a tensile strength of about 485 MPa, and a yield strength of about 170 MPa. 304L has outstanding weldability, formability, and machinability and retains good toughness even at cryogenic temperatures.
